Bergman Associates was founded in 1991 by Creative Director Robert Bergman, who began his career as Lead Art Director for Fabien Baron at Baron's agency, Baron and Baron and at Interview Magazine. Bergman then worked with Ryuichi Sakamoto and David Byrne, with beauty companies such as Coty and KAO, as Creative Director of international editions of Vogue Magazine, and as V. P. Creative Director at L'ORÉAL — the first and only Creative Director to lead multiple brands across multiple international divisions of the L'ORÉAL Worldwide Group.

Since 1994, L'ORÉAL's Redken brand with the help of Bergman Associates, has grown by more than 100 million dollars — becoming North America's largest professional beauty brand— and in spite of the current economic downturn, the Redken brand continues an unprecedented and strong positive growth.
Bergman Associates created L'ORÉAL's Tecni.art and Textureline brands which have grown into two of the world's professional beauty power-brands. The success of the brands were reflected in the acquisition by the L'ORÉAL Group.
In 2008, L'ORÉAL commissioned Bergman Associates to successfully modernize and reposition the world's largest cosmetics brand, Maybelline. Currently, L'ORÉAL is working with Bergman Associates to modernize, reposition and prepackage their most recent acquisition, Pureology.
Bergman Associates rebranded and designed L'ORÉAL's haircare brand VIVE PRO, designed and branded L'ORÉAL Professionnel's new hairstyling brand Texture Expert, and developed, designed and branded the first L'ORÉAL non-acquired new brand in over ten years— for Shu Uemura.
